Cowboys yearly review: 2019

After winning their season opener against the St George Illawarra Dragons in torrential rain at 1300SMILES Stadium, the Cowboys struggled through the early part of the season, losing five of their next six games.

Things did turn around in the middle of the season, winning four of five games, before a lean end to the year saw the team miss the top eight for a second straight season.

Injuries played a major part, losing Te Maire Martin (bleed on the brain), Justin O’Neill (ruptured spleen) and Matt Scott (mild stroke) to long-term injuries throughout the year.

On one hand, 2019 saw the club farewell life members in Matt Scott and Scott Bolton, but saw Cowboys Academy graduates Reuben Cotter, Peter Hola and Murray Taulagi all make their NRL debuts.

Both Josh McGuire and Michael Morgan represented Queensland in State of Origin, while John Asiata, Jason Taumalolo (Tonga), Kurt Baptiste and Dan Russell (Papua New Guinea) all represented their country.

In the Queensland Cup, the Townsville Blackhawks finished fourth, with the Mackay Cutters and Northern Pride both missed the playoffs.
