The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have reaffirmed their long-term commitment to the growth of rugby league in Far North Queensland, today announcing an increased investment in the Cairns-based Northern Pride.
From 1 November, the Cowboys will assume operational responsibility for the Pride and hold three seats on a restructured five-member Northern Pride Board.
Today’s announcement secures the long-term sustainability of the Pride, providing the club with the financial backing, governance support and administrative oversight of the Cowboys while strengthening rugby league pathways across the region.
The partnership ensures aspiring players throughout Far North Queensland have a clear and connected pathway to the highest levels of the game, beginning with local FNQRL clubs, progressing through the Northern Pride's state-based programs and ultimately reaching the NRL and NRLW with the Cowboys.
Operationally, there will be no major changes at the Pride, with Hostplus Cup Head Coach Sam Williams and BMD Premiership Head Coach Colin Wilkie remaining in their roles.
The football relationship between the Cowboys and Pride also remains unchanged under the existing Affiliation Agreement, which runs through to 2028.
Cowboys Football Club CEO Michael Luck said the investment reflected the Cowboys' unwavering commitment to ensuring rugby league continues to thrive across Far North Queensland for generations to come.
"The operating model for standalone Queensland Cup clubs can become vulnerable at times due to competition structures, local economic conditions, affiliate relationships and a range of other factors," Luck said.
"This long-term commitment from the Cowboys to support and strengthen the governance, strategy and financial position of the Northern Pride provides certainty for the club and ensures its ongoing sustainability across the Hostplus Cup, BMD Premiership and junior pathways competitions.
"Far North Queensland has always been an incredibly important part of the Cowboys family. The region has produced more players to wear Cowboys jerseys than any other area within our footprint, and the connection between our club and the communities of Cairns, the Cape and Torres Strait runs deep.
"We know how important the Northern Pride is, not only as an elite pathway but as a source of pride for local communities and grassroots clubs right across the region. This investment is about ensuring young players can continue to dream big while staying connected to the communities where their rugby league journeys begin.
"We are committed to the current operating model of the Northern Pride because of the outstanding work done by the Pride board, led by Chair Kym McPhee-Smith, as well as CEO Garreth Smith and his team, to position the club for the future.
"There will be no change for current staff, players and volunteers, whose dedication has been instrumental in building the Northern Pride into what it is today."
Smith said the investment from the Cowboys would strengthen opportunities for young players and reinforce the Pride's vital role in Far North Queensland rugby league.
"We're incredibly excited about what this means for the future of the Northern Pride," he said.
"Our focus remains firmly on providing a strong and sustainable pathway from grassroots rugby league through to the NRL and NRLW.
"Rugby league plays an important role in bringing communities together across Far North Queensland and the Northern Pride sits at the heart of that journey for many young players and their families.
"With the Cowboys' long-term commitment and support behind us, the board want to build on the strong foundations already in place and ensure the Pride continues to be a driving force for participation, development and success throughout the region.
