The carnival-like tournament will be the first and only time in 2016 that all clubs will compete at the same ground on the same day, with many players likely to make their debuts for new clubs.

Kostjasyn said he loved the fast-paced nature of Nines rugby league, adding that all his teammates were looking forward to the Auckland tournament marking a return to the field in 2016.

“It’s always a brilliant weekend and the boys will be ready to get down to business after what’s been a condensed pre-season,” Kostjasyn said.

“We’ll be ready to hit the ground running come early February and should have close to the whole squad fit and available for selection."

The Cowboys are drawn in the Rangitoto pool for the tournament, alongside the Panthers, Tigers and Knights.
