Two action-packed days of schoolboys rugby league action wrapped up in Townsville yesterday with the completion of rounds five and six of the Aaron Payne Cup.

Supported by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and named in honour of the former club champion, the event involves teams from seven North Queensland schools playing each other in a round-robin style tournament.

Wednesday's highlights included a match between St Teresa’s College Abergowrie and Rockhampton’s Cathedral College, with Cathedral posting an impressive 32-6 win.

Townsville’s Ignatius Park College defeated Mackay’s St Patrick’s College 20-10, while Kirwan State High School defeated Mackay State High School 64-0.

Semi-finals of the Cowboys Challenge – an under-15s competition involving the same schools – were also played, with Cathedral College defeating Ignatius Park College 28-12 and Kirwan 18 defeating Mercy College (St Pat’s) 6.

Tuesday's results of the Aaron Payne Cup:
• St Teresa’s College Abergowrie 28 def Mackay SHS 12
• Ignatius Park College 44 def The Cathedral College 6
• Kirwan SHS 42 def St Brendan’s 0

The Aaron Payne Cup culminates in the grand final to be played as a curtain-raiser to the North Queensland Cowboys v Parramatta Eels round 20 NRL match at 1300SMILES Stadium on Monday 27 July.
