North Queensland Toyota Cowboys members and fans will have the chance to test their skills on an interactive driving simulator when Queensland Youth Services (QYS) take over Community Corner at this Sunday’s NRL clash at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
Community Corner, proudly presented by Townsville City Council, provides local charities and community organisations with a platform to engage with members and fans at Cowboys home games.
Thanks to match day sponsor StreetSmarts – who gifted their Community Corner presence to QYS as part of their sponsorship – Queensland Youth Services will be in Community Corner from gates opening at 1.30pm through to NRL Cowboys v Rabbitohs kick-off at 4.05pm.
Patrons will have the opportunity to experience the LearnIT driving simulator and learn more about road safety, mentoring and support programs helping young Queenslanders become safer, more confident drivers.
The activation coincides with National Road Safety Week (17-24 May), reinforcing the shared responsibility we all have for road safety and remembering the 1300 people who lose their life on Australian roads each year, along with the 40,000 who are seriously injured.
The Queensland Government is a proud partner of National Road Safety Week and the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys through the StreetSmarts road safety education program.
QYS LearnIT Team Leader Tamara Purdie said the game day experience would help spark important conversations around road safety while showcasing the impact of the LearnIT program.
“Community Corner is an exciting opportunity for Queensland Youth Services and the LearnIT program to connect with the wider community, promote the importance of road safety and showcase the incredible impact mentoring can have on young people,” Ms Purdie said.
“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to engage potential volunteer mentors and share how they can make a real difference in the lives of young drivers in our community.
“Road safety is something that affects everyone, and positive support and mentoring can have a lasting impact on young drivers.
“StreetSmarts has been an incredible supporter of the program, helping us continue delivering meaningful road safety education and hands-on learning experiences for young people across Queensland. Their support is helping create safer roads and brighter futures for young drivers.”
Delivered by Queensland Youth Services, the LearnIT program supports young people to gain supervised driving hours, build confidence behind the wheel and access practical education and mentoring support.
The program is particularly valuable for young people who face barriers to obtaining their licence, helping improve access to employment, education and independence.
“Townsville City Council proudly supports Community Corner, giving local groups a free platform to share their messages with Cowboys fans at every home game,” Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said.
“Safe drivers make our streets and community safer so it’s great to see Queensland Youth Services promoting its LearnIT program during National Road Safety Week, helping our young drivers build safer habits.”
