North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Head Coach Todd Payten joined Triple M’s The Rush Hour with A.B & Elliot on Monday to discuss Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter’s appointment as Cowboys co-captains.

“These kids are what our club was built for. They are local products. They epitomise what we stand for,” Payten said.

“I see a lot of their leadership qualities day-to-day. It’s not what they say but it’s what they do. The way they prepare for training, the way that they go about their business on the training pitch and the way that they compete for their teammates. It’s the way they treat people, the type of men they are around the house and within the community.”

Payten spoke on how much Jason Taumalolo and Chad Townsend have brought to the leadership position and how they will help mold Tom and Reuben into great leaders.

“I think both of those guys have given our club great service. Chad has had a profound effect on our group on and off the pitch. Jase is a leader by his actions. In big moments in games for a long time, he’s really stood up and he trains at a level that you need to to get your job done.

“They have been great examples and I have to say that both of those guys have shown great humility around the decision. They are willing and want us to be successful and want Tom and Reubs to be successful and they are going to give them all the support they need for us to get there.”
