They don't come any tougher than Summa
Summa, who was diagnosed with B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at just nine years old, underwent 805 days of intensive treatment in Brisbane, far away from her home in Townsville. After 3.5 years in remission, her leukemia returned in April 2025, meaning her family needed to return to Brisbane for treatment. Early in treatment she developed Tumour Lysis Syndrome and kidney failure, requiring emergency surgery, dialysis and time in Paediatric ICU. Her recovery was complicated by serious infections including E. coli, fungal infection and typhlitis, requiring surgery, blood clot treatment, and months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Now 16 and 12 months into her treatment, Summa and her family were recently given the good news that her treatment is due to end in April 2027. Summa hopes to one day become a paediatric surgeon and return to Queensland Children’s Hospital as a doctor. This Saturday at Magic Round, her name will appear on Jake Clifford’s kicking tee as part of the NRL’s ‘Kick for a Cause’ initiative.
