Christmas came early for patients and their families at Townsville University Hospital yesterday when Cowboys in Capes Ambassador Murray Taulagi, teammate Mason Barber and NRLW Cowboy Bree Chester brought festive cheer with an extra surprise - everyone’s favourite mascot Bluey.
Together they delivered a Santa sack full of presents and plenty of smiles for those impacted by sickness or injury.
"Christmas time is all about giving, and being able to bring some happiness to these kids means a lot to us," Murray said.
“Bluey definitely stole the show, all the kids were super excited to see him and seeing their faces light up reminds us how powerful a small act of kindness can be, especially at this time of year."
Cowboys in Capes is proudly presented by Sun Metals. This visit, delivered in collaboration with Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation, included stopping in at Townsville Hospital’s Children’s and Paediatric Oncology Wards.
Brighter Lives CEO Stephanie Naunton said Cowboys in Capes visits were always special for patients but were particularly important for parents and loved ones around the holidays.
"For most of us this time of year is exciting and happy, but for those who are ill or have sick or injured loved ones in hospital, Christmas can be difficult," she said.
"Understanding that you’re not alone and people do care, particularly those you look up to and admire like Cowboys players truly does make a difference."
Sun Metals staff joined in on the festive fun, having supported the program for a third full year now.
“At Sun Metals we’re truly proud to support this program and the players who give their time to brighten someone’s day when it’s needed most,” said Sun Metals CEO Ron Lee.
“Even a brief visit can bring comfort and connection during a challenging time, and we’re honoured to help share a little hope and kindness.”
