Cowboys announce new coach education workshop

The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys are strengthening grassroots rugby league with a new coaching development initiative aimed at supporting and upskilling community coaches.

Cowboys coaching and high-performance staff will lead a practical workshop over two sessions on Saturday, 13 December at Jack Manski Oval.

NRLW Head Coach Ricky Henry said investing in coaches has a direct impact on the quality and depth of rugby league across the North.

“Better coaches create better players and stronger clubs,” Henry said.

“When we equip coaches with knowledge, support and practical tools, we’re investing in the future of rugby league across the North Queensland region."

With communities spread across one of the largest footprints in the league, many coaches face barriers simply due to distance, with limited access to face-to-face education, fewer development opportunities and the challenge of travelling long hours.

The new initiative aims to bring practical, high-value development directly to coaches.

Head of Women’s Elite Pathways, Anita Creenaune, said addressing these challenges is a priority.

“We know how important good coaching is to both player development and retention,” Creenaune said.

“If we can help them feel more supported and more confident, the flow-on benefits will be felt right through our pathways.”

The workshop includes practical application, two mentoring sessions, invitations to NRLW training sessions and five lucky coaches will also be chosen for a rare game-day shadowing experience with NRLW Head Coach Ricky Henry.
