In a landmark moment for junior rugby league in Far North Queensland, the Northern Peninsula Area Bulls made their debut at the Gorden Tallis Cup 2025, thanks to the generous support of North Queensland Toyota Cowboys principal partner, Toyota.
Thirteen young players and six adult chaperones embarked on a memorable journey from the remote town of Bamaga at the northern tip of Cape York to Townsville, travelling two hours by air to Cairns before completing the final leg with a four-hour bus ride. For many of the kids, the trip marked their first time venturing south of Cairns.
The NPA Bulls’ participation marked the first time a team from the Northern Peninsula Area has entered the Gorden Tallis Cup, an under 10’s tournament bringing together junior teams from across Queensland to celebrate grassroots rugby league.
Terry Abendnego, Team Manager for the NPA Bulls, reflected on the impact of the experience:
“Toyota’s commitment to community values and youth development has made a significant impact on these young kids from NPA. For many of these kids this trip was not just about playing rugby league — it was an opportunity to experience teamwork, resilience and the joy of playing the game that we all love. The memories created during this event will inspire them for years to come.”
The support of Toyota not only enabled the team’s travel and participation, but also helped foster a deeper connection between remote communities and the broader North Queensland rugby league family.
At Toyota, we’re proud to support initiatives that empower young people and strengthen regional communities,” said Vin Naidoo, Chief Marketing Officer from Toyota Australia.
“Helping the NPA Bulls travel to Townsville for the Gorden Tallis Cup is about more than just sport, it’s about creating opportunities, building confidence, and celebrating the spirit of North Queensland. We’re thrilled to be driving their Rugby league journey”
As the Bulls return home with new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a renewed passion for the sport, their journey stands as a powerful reminder of the role sport can play in shaping young lives and strengthening communities.
