The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys All Abilities team has participated in an historic Triple Header Game Day celebrating inclusion, teamwork, community, and the greatest game of all.
In a true demonstration of collaboration in the name of rugby league, three rival NRL clubs united to make dreams come true for 6 teams of passionate players.
Cowboys Programs Manager Ray Thompson said representatives from the Cowboys, Titans and Warriors, plus the Tweed Seagulls put their passion for the sport they love on display at Cbus Stadium earlier this month.
“It was a privilege to witness first-hand the pure joy that comes from playing our great game,” Ray said.
“As a former Cowboys player, I truly appreciate what it means to play the sport you love on a big stage and represent your region and family, and these guys and girls have overcome more challenges than most just to take the field.
“The Cowboys won our game against Titans Inclusive on the scoreboard, but I think every player, staff member and supporter involved understands the real victory was felt in joining together to demonstrate something bigger – the opportunities available for players living with intellectual and/or physical disabilities to play rugby league in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.”
The first ever North Queensland Cowboys All Abilities rugby league team was selected from the Townsville and Mackay representative squads after an epic trial game played as a curtain raiser to the NRL Cowboys win over the Dragons at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in July.
Supported by Queensland Rugby League, Endeavour Foundation and Feros Care, the North Queensland team flew in to compete on the Gold Coast, making it a hugely memorable and significant experience.
“The spirit in which all teams played the game was inspiring and a reminder of what rugby league is all about,” Ray said.
“Our game is a powerful tool to bring people together, build confidence and promote health and exercise.
“It was an experience I think they will all likely never forget, one that I’m proud our club supports, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future.”
