The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have agreed to terms with hooker Reed Mahoney, running through at least the end of the 2028 NRL season.
Long-established as one of the leading dummy-halves in the NRL, Mahoney has appeared in 164 games over the course of eight seasons with the Eels and Bulldogs.
After registering 101 games for the Eels, Mahoney switched to the Bulldogs in 2023 where he has been a leading contributor in Canterbury-Bankstown’s charge to a drought-breaking finals campaign in 2024 and a top two spot through 17 rounds this season.
The 27-year-old has been remarkably durable throughout his NRL career, appearing in at least 21 games in six of seven seasons since becoming a top grade regular in 2019, often playing 80 minutes.
Mahoney has regularly been part of the Maroons extended squads in recent seasons and has appeared for the Prime Minister’s XIII.
“Hooker is a critical position on the rugby league field, they touch the ball more than any other player, set the tone of your attack and are a key member of your defensive intent, which is why we are thrilled to be able to secure Reed on a long-term deal,” Cowboys General Manager of Football Micheal Luck said.
“His service is as good as any dummy-half in the NRL, he has craft in his game through a good sleight of hand, he’s a threat close to the line and has one of the better kicking games of the hookers in our competition.
“Defensively he thrives on leading the line up and creating intent on how his team defends.
“We believe he will be a terrific addition to our squad for 2026 and beyond and look forward to bringing him home to Queensland.”
