Caped Cowboy - Taulagi takes on new role

North Queensland Toyota Cowboy Murray Taulagi has taken on an important new off-field role, with the club announcing his appointment as official Cowboys in Capes ambassador this week.

The Cowboys winger was presented with his very own yellow cape and, along with his eager sidekick Tom Mikaele, visited sick kids and their families at Townsville University Hospital yesterday.

Cowboys in Capes, presented by Sun Metals, sees NRL and NRLW players make regular hospital visits, bringing comfort and joy to patients experiencing challenging times.

Taulagi found the experience at a previous visit so meaningful that he put his hand up to be involved on an ongoing basis.

“It’s means a lot to me personally, I just love coming here and seeing the kids’ faces light up, and bring some fun and enjoyment to the families too,” Taulagi said.

“They’re all here because they’re going through something big in their lives and I don’t know what it’s like to be in their shoes,” he said.

“These are the kids that often don’t get the opportunity to come to a game or see us in person, so any chance we get the opportunity to visit and put a smile on their face just by spending some time with them, I’m more than happy to do it.”

This week’s visit was in collaboration with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), with Murray and Tom getting hands on crafting dinosaur houses as part of the charity’s Learning Legends program.

“Cowboys in Capes at Ronald McDonald Family Room is one of our families’ favourite experiences,” said Tamara South CEO RMHC.

“It gives them a lift during difficult times, a break from their worries, and it helps them feel normal but also special because their idols are here,” she said.

“More than that, it makes them feel like the whole community is behind them, because if someone as important as the Cowboys are spending time with them, it means we’re all circling our arms around them.”

Sun Metals employees accompany the players on the visits, delivering fun gifts to young patients and their siblings.
