Paul Green Medal to be presented this Thursday night

The medal honouring the man who led the Cowboys to its historic maiden premiership will be contested in North Queensland for the first time on Thursday night.

The Paul Green Medal was jointly announced by the Cowboys and Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks earlier this year, with the medal to be presented to the player of the match in all fixtures between the two sides moving forward.

Green passed away at the age of 49 on August 11, 2022.

The most successful coach in Cowboys history, Green guided the club to the finals in four of his seven seasons in charge, including the maiden 2015 premiership campaign and another grand final appearance in 2017.

Prior to his coaching career, Green appeared in 162 premiership games as a player, including 35 for the Cowboys and 95 for the Sharks, winning the Rothmans Medal playing for Cronulla in 1995.

Green’s son Jed will lead the Cowboys on to the field on Thursday, while daughter Emerson will lead the Sharks out.

Amanda Green, Paul’s wife, will present a cheque for $5,000 on behalf of the Cowboys, matching the donation from the Sharks earlier in the season, to the Australian Sports Bank.

The coach of the winning team will select the Paul Green Medal winner, which will be presented on field following full time. Cronulla’s Nicho Hynes was the inaugural winner in the Round 9 clash earlier this season.
