Behind the scenes: Cowboys aquatic recovery

Learn about the new aquatic recovery area at the home of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys, the Hutchinson Builders Centre.

Terry Dwyer of Poolwerx Townsville speaks about the Cowboys aquatic recovery area.

When the Cowboys moved into their new state-of-the-art training centre earlier this year, they were fortunate to gain access to a world-class recovery facility, inclusive of an aquatic recovery area.

The aquatic recovery area compromises a cold river, lap pool and a hot plunge pool.

Head of Performance, Paul Bowman has taken full advantage of the new facilities, utilising each pool individually to suit the needs of the players, and alternating between pools depending on the focus of recovery.

The shallow lane in the lap pool allows players to walk, run and mobilize, while the deep lane is used for deep water running.

The cold river pool is set at 12 degrees and is used extensively as a constant immersion where the squad will spend a significant time in the pool (between 10 – 12 minutes a session) and is typically used post-match or after heavy training sessions.

As the week progresses, and in the days leading into a game, the squad use more contrast water therapy where they alternate between the cold river, the lap pool, and the hot plunge pool.

The hot plunge pool is used to contrast with the cold river and for relaxation.

“The hot plunge will cause vasodilation (opening) of the blood vessels in contrast with vasoconstriction (closing) in the cold river.

"This dilation and constriction allows the body to naturally pump out waste metabolites from exercise, giving greater recovery and reduced soreness”, Paul Bowman said.

Cowboys preferred pool servicing provider, Poolwerx Townsville, has been integral to the maintenance of their new aquatic home.

Glenn ‘Minty’ Mintern caught up with Terry Dwyer, Poolwerx Townsville’s franchise partner, to discuss how important the upkeep of the new facilities is to the squad and to learn a bit about Poolwerx Townsville.

Terry and the team have worked with the Cowboys at the old HQ for eight years before moving to the Hutchinson Builders Centre.

“We’ve been operating here in North Queensland for 16 years now. We have a team of 24 people and can hang our hat on being Franchisee of the Year for the whole of Poolwerx National.”

‘It’s been quite amazing to get involved in a facility like this that the Cowboys have,” Terry Dwyer said.
