While the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys' first home game gave members and fans plenty to celebrate, recipients of the first round of the Field of Dreams program had a special reason to rejoice!

Thanks to the generous support of the Cowboys Leagues Club, thirty volunteers from national charity,  the Pyjama Foundation were given the opportunity to attend 1300SMILES Stadium to watch their heroes live in the Cowboys' season opener against the Sharks.

Fundraising and event coordinator (Townsville) Robyn Narratone said the charity was thrilled to be part of the program again in 2018.

“We were really excited to be chosen for Field of Dreams; it’s a great way to say thank you to our wonderful volunteers,” Ms Narratone said.

“They [volunteers] were super excited and the tickets were snapped up in under an hour.

"We'd like to say a big thank you to the Cowboys Leagues Club for their support."

The Pyjama Foundation is a national charity, with local branches in Townsville, Cairns and Mackay, which aims to support children living in foster care by providing free learning-based mentoring by volunteers called Pyjama Angels.

The organisation was established in 2004 with the goal of providing a more positive outlook for children in care, after statistics of poor literacy and numeracy levels of foster children showed correlation to a lifetime of disadvantage.

In Townsville alone, 101 Pyjama Angels visit 103 children, visiting the same child every week for up to 1.5 hours to read books aloud, play educational games and work on their numeracy skills.

Cowboys Leagues Club general manager Clint Williams said the club was delighted to continue their partnership with the Pyjama Foundation, and make a valuable contribution to a local charity.

“As a community-focused club ourselves we respect the impact these volunteers are having on the youth in our town, and being able to reward them for their work in our region is a special opportunity,” Mr Williams said.

Each game day, one of our Field of Dreams partners donates home game tickets to their preferred charity/organisation in recognition of their valuable contribution to our local community, giving over 400 special individuals the chance to watch their team live in action each season.
