Friday night’s home game against the Sharks signals the start of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys' 2018 season, and the return of the popular LGIAsuper Community Hub.

Located in the Western forecourt of 1300SMILES Stadium, LGIAsuper Community Hub plays host to not-for-profit organisations throughout the season to help them raise awareness for their cause.

The first community organisation in the Hub for 2018 is Deadly Choices, an initiative of the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH), which aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families.

Institute for Urban Indigenous Health CEO Adrian Carson said the Deadly Choices team were looking forward to sharing their healthy lifestyles messages with North Queenslanders at the game, building on the success of programs currently delivered in south-east Queensland.

“Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service staff along with the Deadly Choices team will engage with game goers to promote the initiative, and [promote] how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can improve their health … by having a health check and receiving a Deadly Choices - TAIHS health check shirt,” Mr Carson said.

“All members of the [Deadly Choices] team are big fans of NRL in general and the impact the sport can have on the health of our community.

“We’re all about building strong leaders among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to encourage healthy lifestyles and create a healthy future for our people.”

Key messages of the Deadly Choices initiative include:

  • The importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders visiting TAIHS to get their health check
  • Prevention is better than cure
  • Access TAIHS and the new Deadly Choices shirt

LGIAsuper is proud to be able to host Deadly Choices in Community Hub, helping to promote the message of making healthy choices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in North Queensland.

Teaming up with the Cowboys gives LGIAsuper the opportunity to drive positive change through education and social initiatives, so be sure to visit the LGIAsuper Community Hub and learn more about the important work this organisation is doing in your community.
