Climbing trees as a young lad in Murgon, southern Queensland, Gavin Cooper always had an affinity with Spider-Man. But two decades on and the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys backrower was well and truly switched Super Hero allegiances to Thor, and he will be proudly wearing the God of Thunder’s colours at 1300SMILES Stadium this Saturday at 5:30pm.
Round 21 in the National Rugby League in ISC Marvel Super Heroes round and the Cowboys will be wearing specially created Thor-themed jerseys for their clash with the Raiders, who will be channelling The Hulk with their playing strip.
Cooper, 29, said the players loved the Marvel Super Heroes concept, and after embracing it last year for a match against the Titans, the team was chomping at the bit to let Thor strut his powerful stuff against the Raiders.
“I mean, what’s better than being a God of Thunder,” Cooper said.
“Kids love the idea of super heroes, and the fact that we get to run around 1300SMILES Stadium as Thor is a fantastic initiative and something our supporters and members can really tap into and share with us.”
“Pitting Thor against the Hulk will be a tough battle but our boys are ready for the challenge.”
This is the second year of this initiative and fans at 1300SMILES Stadium this Saturday are encouraged to dress up as their favourite super hero and take advantage of the many themed activities being held in conjunction with the match. These include:

Marvel activation zone: Head over to the Marvel activation zone in the north-east corner between 3-7pm for some serious superhero fun! Try out the Thor hammer challenge and the Hulkbuster smash plus you can get your photo taken with the Thor mascot!
Marvel masks: Be sure to pick up your Marvel mask at the gates or from the Marvel activation zone in the north-east corner –stocks are limited. Have a look on the inside of your mask to see if you’ve won the Marvel prize – two priority passes to Oz-Comic Con! If your mask has the Avengers sticker on the inside you’re our winner – head to the game day office at NRL half time to claim.
Fan photo booth: Get your photo taken over at the fan photo booth at the Western gate – the perfect memento for all those superhero costumes! You can take home a printed pic or share it on social media – don’t forget to tag it #ridemcowboys!
Super hero selfies: Be sure to post a selfie of your superhero costume to Twitter or Instagram with hashtag #ridemcowboys and we’ll put you up on the big screen!
