James Tamou (neck): After consulting specialists in Queensland and interstate, the Test and Origin front-rower is expected to undergo a micro-discectomy in Townsville tomorrow. This should correct ongoing issues, emanating from the C6-C7 level, that he has faced for some time. However, with a 12-week recovery period, he will not be available for selection in the Cowboys’ NRL Auckland Nines squad or be able to play in the All Stars game. Tamou has been on modified training since the start of pre-season and took part in the four-day Cairns camp which finished today.

• Matt Scott (shoulder): The co-captain is still recovering from post-season shoulder reconstruction surgery. He has started weights work and on-field training (no contact).

Cameron King (knee): After rupturing his ACL in round 10, the hooker will progress to full training over the next week.

Scott Bolton (shoulder): The forward has started weights and on-field training (no contact) after undergoing post-season shoulder reconstruction surgery.
