Toyota Cowboys winger Curtis Rona met his namesake face to face for the first time today ahead of a big weekend for both of them at two different North Queensland sporting venues.

The day after Rona lines up for North Queensland against South Sydney at 1300SMILES Stadium, “Rona” the racehorse will have her first start for trainer Aaron Payne at the inaugural Cowboys Race Day at Townsville Turf Club, Cluden Park, in Townsville on Sunday.

In the racebook “Rona” is known as 'Wine By The Glass', a four-year-old mare who has had 11 starts for one win and two thirds.

She picked up her alias thanks to some physical similarities to the Cowboys winger that the Cowboys life member noticed when she arrived at his stable.

“She’s just like Curtis – very tall and athletic,” Payne said.

“We call her Rona around the stables and when we let Curtis know, he was pretty pumped.”

Fourth on the Gold Coast in her last start on 14 June, Wine By The Glass has drawn the outside barrier in a field of 11 for the Cowboys Leagues Club Benchmark 60 Handicap (1200m), which will be race three on an eight-race program on Sunday.

The Cowboys Race Day, which will include a Fashions on the Field competition, is sponsored by BrisClean with the first race at 12.44pm with the last at 5.04pm.
