Toyota Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston says he has fond memories of Toowoomba and can’t wait to get his 2014 season started in the Darling Downs city on Saturday night.

The two-time Golden Boot winner will play his only pre-season trial of the year against the Gold Coast Titans at Clive Berghofer Oval, a ground he became familiar with when he lived in Toowoomba during the final years of his school days in the early 1990s.

“I have some very good memories. I did year 11 and 12 there and they were probably the best schooling years of my life,” Thurston said today.

“I made a lot of great friends who I’m still in touch with today.

“It will be good to go back there and play at the ground that I played a bit of footy on and see all the local faces that I used to be around when I was there.”

Thurston’s last appearance in Toowoomba was for Canterbury before he had made his top-grade debut.

He turned in an amazing four-try performance and has gone on to become one of the best players of his generation.

“Toowoomba’s where I had my first job – at Coles in the butcher’s section,” he recalled today.
