Holidays are over for Kangaroos front-rower James Tamou who officially started his 2014 pre-season with the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys today.

Originally not scheduled to make his return to Cowboys HQ until Monday, Tamou elected to come back to work early to get ready for the new season which is now just two months away.

He had to tackle a double training day to begin 2014, starting with some fitness and endurance work at James Cook University in the morning before hitting the gym for some specialised defensive work and weights in the afternoon.

His World Cup-winning teammates Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott and Brent Tate will officially kick off their pre-season schedule on Monday, although all three have been doing some private work away from Cowboys HQ.

Tate has also been spotted in the gym twice this week.

The four Kangaroos were given until 13 January off after not completing their Rugby League World Cup commitments in the UK and Ireland until early December.

North Queensland’s opening trial – against Brisbane at Redcliffe – is just a month away, with the Auckland Nines to be held a week later prior to the final trial against the Gold Coast Titans in Toowoomba.
