Thorby had a four-year career with St George Illawarra where he developed a reputation as a reliable back-up forward without quite being able to gain a permanent starting spot in the strong Dragons pack.
His first NRL appearance came midway through the 2007 season and he was part of the Dragons when they won the 2010 premiership, although he missed out on playing in the grand final.
Thorby spent most of the 2011 season playing for the Cowboys’ feeder club, the Northern Pride, in the Intrust Super Cup. However, in 2012 he broke through into North Queensland’s top squad and played 15 matches after making his debut in the victory against Canberra in the nation’s capital.
