High-five to Althea Projects

Cowboys Field of Dreams program partner Southern Cross Austereo have donated 30 tickets to Althea Projects in recognition of their important work in supporting children in need, to give them the best opportunity to have a happy childhood.

Each home game, a Field of Dreams partner donates tickets to recognise the contribution of a community organisation to North Queensland, with 360 special guests a year who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to attend a Cowboys game watching their heroes live in action.

Althea Projects CEO Mandy Thompson said the Field of Dreams program is a wonderful opportunity to reward foster and kinship carers who support vulnerable children in our community.

“Foster carers provide a safe and loving home for children aged from birth to 18 years. This can be short term for a few days or weeks, or longer term over several years,” she said.

Shared family care provides training and support to foster carers in order to equip them to care for the children who may have a range of needs.

“The carers and children from Shared Family Care are really looking forward to getting behind the Cowboys this game, in particular it being the local derby between old rivals the Broncos; it is something the children in particular wouldn’t normally have the chance to do, that is, get out and see their local sporting legends in action,” Ms Thompson said.

Althea Projects also recognises National Child Protection Week which kicks off on Sunday 3 September.

National Child Protection Week is everyone’s opportunity to play a part in protecting children and help prevent child abuse and neglect.

Althea Projects and the Queensland Government are encouraging the North Queensland community to keep children “More Than Safe” as Child Protection Week is promoted in our community.

“All community members are welcome to attend the local Child Protection Week Symposium being held at the Townsville Hospital this Friday, 9am-3pm.”
