LGIAsuper Community Hub welcomes Childhood Cancer Support at Thursday night's game, with information and giveaways for members and fans.

Almost 1,000 Australian children are diagnosed with childhood cancer each year, many from North Queensland who need to receive lengthy treatment from major hospitals in Brisbane.

For regional families, finding accommodation and support services away from home can be very distressing, but that’s where Childhood Cancer Support can help.

The only paediatric oncology organisation/charity in Queensland designed to specifically support and provide specialised accommodation to children with all forms of childhood cancer and their families, Childhood Cancer Support have been helping regional families for over 42 years.

General manager Helen Crew said their main aim is to help take away some of the stress and anxiety involved in relocating while their child receives life-saving cancer treatment.

“We do this free of charge – we pay for the rates, water, electricity for the families so all they have to do is move in and concentrate on the wellbeing of their sick child,” Ms Crew said.

“We are also the main provider of transport services to and from our accommodation in Brisbane to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane – transporting the regional children and their parents to and from our accommodation to the hospital so the child can receive their oncology treatment.”

Having relied on the generosity of the community to support the organisation since its inception in 1975, Helen says the main goal of being at LGIAsuper Community Hub is to raise awareness within the North Queensland community.

“We are very much an unknown charity to most of Queensland, even though we have been supporting regional families whose children have cancer for 42 years and providing these families with a home,” Ms Crew said.

“We’ll be encouraging the public to support our biggest awareness raising and fundraising event, Talk Like a Pirate Day, on 19 September, as well as giving out information flyers and heart-shaped lollipops.

“We’re asking the regional areas to support Childhood Cancer Support so we can continue to support your local families when their child is fighting cancer.”

LGIAsuper is proud to partner with Childhood Cancer Support, who have served the local community for over 42 years, so be sure to visit the Hub and learn more this important cause.

Childhood Cancer Support: As one of Australia’s leading childhood cancer support organisations, Childhood Cancer Support is a family-focused charity offering regional families a place to call home while their child undergoes life-saving cancer treatment. For more information, visit ccs.org.au.
