Students from Aitkenvale State School are definitely making ‘Every Day Count’ as they compete with other schools in the region for the highest student attendance percentage in the Try for 5! program.

Try for 5! school attendance challenge

The school recently received a special visit from Cowboys community ambassador Matt Bowen as a reward for their efforts, with the Cowboys legend reporting back that the classes were embracing the program's motto of making every day at school count.

Aitkenvale State School Try for 5! coordinator Jason Pritchard said the Try for 5! program complements other school programs in place aimed at helping get kids to school.

“Try for 5! helps our other attendance programs and is an additional tool we can use," Mr Pritchard said.

"The biggest incentive for kids are the prizes!

“Every parade we have a winning year level, not just a class level from the Try for 5! (program), and for that they all get an ice cream.”

Try for 5! is designed to address short and long-term impacts of students missing foundation learning in their primary years through poor school attendance.

The program motivates and rewards individual classes and schools for their attendance record during the challenge period, and engages students and families using the club's profile and ambassadors.

Try for 5! is structured to reinforce a positive school culture, communicate high expectations of attendance, and record and follow-up student absences and provide support where required.
