Wingers are meant to score tries and North Queensland Toyota Cowboys flyer Kyle Feldt says he’s relieved to “get a few under his belt” for season 2017 as the team prepares to host the New Zealand Warriors tonight.

The Cowboys’ leading try-scorer in 2016 with 15 four-pointers in 24 games, Feldt’s try-scoring prowess went missing for the first nine games of this season as the team as a whole struggled with their attack in the opening two months.

But the hulking Townsville product has fired in recent weeks, scoring eight in eight games to trail only young behemoth Coen Hess (11) for most tries scored in the team this year.

Feldt’s run of hot form has coincided with the Cowboys playing at a consistently high level for the past eight weeks, the team now comfortably in the top six with an 11-win, six-loss record and having won their past three on the trot.

“Like I said before, once one comes, more will follow, and it never really worried me that I hadn’t scored,” Feldt said.

“That’s how it’s panned out and it feels good to be contributing to the team in that way.”

Feldt, 25, is in his fifth season of NRL with the club, and has scored 41 tries in 63 games.

His only try hat-trick, coincidently, came against the very team the Cowboys play on Saturday, the Norths Thuringowa junior posting a treble during the Cowboys 50-16 win over the Warriors in Auckland two years ago.

Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.30pm.
