As the players head into a mini-break, North Queensland Toyota Cowboys hooker Jake Granville says the team is focused and ready to perform at a high level for the last third of their 2017 National Rugby League campaign.

Fresh from an emphatic and impressive road win over the Canberra Raiders, the Cowboys had just a weights sessions and review this week before being granted a six-day hiatus planned around the team’s second bye of the season.

The players return to duty next Tuesday ahead of a frenetic final third of the season where they play alternative away-and-home matches over an eight-week period, starting with their game against the Rabbitohs in Cairns on Sunday 16 July.

“We’re heading into the end part of our season, so this bye round and the break with it, will be good for the team,” Granville said.

“We have just come off a tough little block of games and it was great to see the improvement over that time, so now we can rest up for a bit, and tackle the last third of the season full of energy and enthusiasm.”

Granville said his first look at new teammate Te Maire Martin in a game situation had left him impressed, and he looked forward to building a strong on-field relationship with the talented young Kiwi.

“I don’t reckon there would be too many players who would have scored two tries in their first game for a new club,” Granville said.

“Te Maire played really well and we all look forward to building good combinations with him.”

The Cowboys currently sit in sixth place with 10 wins and six losses so far, but could move up the ladder this weekend despite not playing, given that they will get two competition points for their second bye of the season.
