Fantastic fun at Laurie Spina Shield!

Another action-packed Laurie Spina Shield – one of the country's biggest annual junior rugby league carnivals – has played out, with almost 1,000 players from Queensland and interstate clubs participating.

A total of 64 teams converged on Townsville for the sixth straight year for the two-day under-11 carnival, hosted by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and proudly supported by Fantastic Furniture.

Fast-paced competition games whittled the teams down to the finalists – Springfield Panthers (Ipswich) and Townsville-based North Thuringowa Devils – who played their thrilling curtain-raiser match at 1300SMILES Stadium.

The local youngsters took the trophy with a 20-0 victory, with some exciting displays of grassroots rugby league talent on show on the main field.

One of the carnival highlights was the opportunity for the young players to get up close and personal with current NRL Cowboys players for an exclusive signing session.

Thank you to all players, officials, parents and supporters for their commitment to this fantastic event, and for their focus on fun, teamwork and participation.
