Game day just got sweeter with LGIAsuper Community Hub partner Wilmar Sugar in the house at Saturday's special Anzac tribute match between the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and Newcastle Knights.

The Australian sugar and renewable energy company, which operates eight sugar mills in North Queensland, will bring its safety mascot Sam the cane train to share messages about cane train safety ahead of the annual cane crushing season, and will also offer members and fans free fairy floss!

General Manager Cane Supply and Grower Relations Paul Giordani said the Wilmar Sugar team would be handing out temporary tattoos, wristbands and cane train safety activity sheets, as well as sharing the message – stay safe and keep clear when cane trains are near!

“Our mills are set to start crushing in June, meaning that cane trains will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mr Giordani said.

“As a major operator in North Queensland, community safety is incredibly important to us and we’re always looking for ways to ensure people return home safely each day.

“Cane trains are a very real part of our region and we want to make sure people know to always approach railway crossings with caution and give way to oncoming cane trains.”

Wilmar Sugar owns and operates mills located between Ingham and Sarina, and produces more than half of Australia’s raw sugar.

LGIAsuper CEO David Todd says he is pleased to welcome Wilmar Sugar’s cane train safety campaign, giving Cowboys members and fans the chance to learn more about one of the North’s largest agricultural commodity businesses.
