The Townsville Blackhawks’ playing roster for their inaugural Intrust Super Cup season is set to have a strong Toyota Cowboys flavour with five ex-Cowboys among the first six signings for the new club.

Ricky Thorby and Anthony Mitchell, who both finished up their contracts as NRL Cowboys this season, have agreed to terms with the Blackhawks, along with former North Queensland NYC squad members Tom Humble, Chris McLean and Corey Jensen.

With 83 NRL games and two ISC premierships between them, Thorby and Mitchell will bring plenty of big-game experience to Townsville’s forward pack.

They’ll be joined by two back-rowers in McLean, who captained the Cowboys under-20s squad that finished as runners-up in the 2011 Toyota Cup, and Jensen, who played more than 50 NYC matches for North Queensland and was the team’s leading points-scorer in 2014.

Best known as a halfback/five-eighth, Humble was with the Cowboys NYC program in 2008 before venturing to the Northern Pride and then on to Parramatta, Wests Tigers and Penrith, playing a total of 27 NRL matches.

Also in the Blackhawks’ first batch of signings is USA Tomahawks World Cup representative Taylor Welch, a winger/fullback who has Super League experience with Warrington.
