Members and fans at the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys home game against the Parramatta Eels on Saturday night will have a special opportunity to honour and support Australia’s past and serving Defence Force personnel and their families.
With the support of Steggles Charity Nest, the Cowboys Community Corner at 1300SMILES Stadium will host the Soldier On charity as well as Legacy, two charities that focus on supporting the Defence community.
“We wanted to give fans the chance to learn more about the work of Soldier On and Legacy and offer their support where they can,” Cowboys community relations manager Fiona Pelling said.
While the work of Legacy in supporting the widows and children of fallen Defence personnel is well known and respected in the community, Soldier On is a relatively new charity established in 2012 to support physically and psychologically wounded current and ex-servicemen and women and their families.
In addition to supporting Legacy and Soldier On fundraising efforts at the game, fans visiting Community Corner will also be able to catch up on what happened on Soldier On’s Remembrance Ride.
As reported in the Townsville Bulletin on Monday, Townsville soldier Warrant Officer Greg Maher was one of a group of cyclists, including soldiers with physical and non-physical injuries, who recently undertook the 320km ride from Sydney to Canberra.
The Community Corner space at North Queensland’s home games reflects the commitment of Steggles and the Cowboys to assist volunteer-run charities and not-for-profit organisations to build awareness and support from the local community.
Twelve charities working in and benefitting the North Queensland community are offered this opportunity throughout the 2014 season.
