Gold socks supporting Men of League

The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will proudly wear special gold socks in their NRL clash with the Canberra Raiders on Sunday to mark the inaugural Men of League weekend.
Players, referees and volunteers from local junior and senior rugby league clubs have been encouraged to join the initiative by purchasing a pair of the commemorative socks, identical to those the Cowboys will wear at Canberra Stadium.
The Men of League weekend aims to increase awareness of the invaluable assistance the Foundation provides to men, women and children within the rugby league community and raise much needed funds towards its programs and initiatives.
The socks, modelled at Cowboys HQ today by NRL forward Glenn Hall, are now available for purchase through the Foundation’s website, www.menofleague.com.
This year, funds raised over the weekend and from the sale of the socks will go directly toward supporting members of the rugby league community who have suffered spinal cord injuries.
President of the Men of League Foundation, Ron Coote AM, said: “The Men of League weekend was created to encourage regional and local league teams to show their support for our work, as well as raise awareness of the foundation and its contribution to the rugby league community.
“On and off the field our great game is about supporting your mates and we hope rugby league teams will get together and support this worthwhile initiative.”
To further encourage clubs to get involved, the foundation is running an online photo competition in which the winning club will receive a private coaching clinic with Kangaroos head coach Tim Sheens.
The competition is running via the foundation’s Facebook page and encourages clubs participating in the Men of League weekend to get creative by snapping a photo of their teams wearing Men of League socks with pride.
“As this is the first annual Men of League weekend, we want to make it a huge success and encourage clubs to get creative for our photo competition,” Mr Coote said.
“We have already had a number of clubs purchase socks and pledge their involvement and look forward to seeing the Men of League gold socks worn proudly on 6-7 July.”
As the only charitable organisation to support the rugby league community in Australia, the Men of League Foundation assists not only ex-players but also referees, volunteers, administrators and anyone else involved with the game at any level.
