Young Cowboys forward Chris Grevsmuhl will play for the Junior Kangaroos for the first time after today being named at lock for the match against the Junior Kiwis at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday week.
The 19-year-old described his selection as a surprise but it was well deserved after he turned in another strong year for the Cowboys under-20s this season, as well as playing four matches for the Mackay Cutters in the Intrust Super Cup.
He represented Queensland in the inaugural Junior State of Origin match against New South Wales at Penrith and was named in the Toyota Cup Team of the Year.
“It’s awesome to get the chance to play in an Aussie jumper at home,” Grevsmuhl said today.
“I’m sure everyone in my family is going to be as excited as I am.”
The back-rower, who has made 50 NYC appearances for the Cowboys, started his junior league career with the Hughenden Hawks before joining Brothers in Townsville.
He has previously represented Australia at schoolboy level and was part of the Queensland under-18 team in 2010 and 2011.
The Junior Kangaroos line-up includes a number of players with NRL experience, including Canberra’s Edrick Lee and Jack Wighton, Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller and Newcastle’s Alex McKinnon.
Grevsmuhl will be up against two of his Cowboys teammates – Jason Taumalolo and Wayne Ulugia - who will be part of the Junior Kiwis team.
The Junior Kangaroos will go into camp this weekend.
