London Olympic Games hockey bronze medallist Nathan Burgers has signed on as the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys’ first member for the 2013 NRL season.
A Cowboys supporter since the club’s inception in 1995, Burgers is back in Townsville after lining up for the Australian Kookaburras in the men’s hockey competition at the games and will be a special guest at Saturday night’s clash with the Newcastle Knights at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
The goalkeeper, who has represented the Kookaburras since 2007, was presented with his 2013 Gold Star family membership and a personalised Cowboys jersey in recognition of his Olympics achievement by back-rower Tariq Sims at Cowboys HQ today.
The jersey has Burgers’ Kookaburras number – 22 – on the back.
It was also announced that Sims would again be the Cowboys’ membership ambassador in 2013 after helping North Queensland to surpass its 10,000 member target this season.
Joining Burgers in the stands to cheer on their favourite team at Dairy Farmers next season will be his wife Kylie and children Halle (four) and Lara (20 months).
“The Cowboys are my team without a doubt. I’ve been a big fan since they came into the competition,” Burgers, who played junior league for the Upper Ross Rams, said.
“I’m a North Queensland boy and can’t wait to be at the ground for this Saturday night and then to be here to see as many games as I can next year now that we’re back in living in Townsville.
“We’re having a great season, making the finals for the second season in a row and hopefully it will get even better over the next few weeks.”
The renewal process for 2012 Cowboys members will be underway shortly and Sims said he was honoured to be back for a second season as the club’s membership ambassador.
“It’s pretty humbling to be the person selected to represent our members and players again in 2013,” Sims, member number 23222, said.
“I know the players love the loyal support we receive from our members and we hope to sign up even more Cowboys supporters as members for next season.
“Taking that extra step and showing your loyalty and passion for the club by becoming a member really means a lot to the Cowboys.
“We had a record number of members this year and we want to do even better than that in 2013.”
